JavaCC 2.1

Formerly from Metamata and now offered as a free download by new owners WebGain, the Java Compiler Compiler (JavaCC) is a tool that allows developers to specify a language syntax and automatically generate, in Java, a code parser for that syntax definition. JavaCC requires only a Java VM 1.1 or later to operate, and has been run successfully run on multiple, major platforms; including Linux, Solaris, Windows, HP-UX, and IRIX.

Key features of JavaCC include:

- The ability to generate certified, pure Java code

- Generation of top-down parsers

- The ability to include both grammar and lexical specs in a single file

- Ability to specify tokens as being case-insensitive at the global or individual lexical specification level

- Additional tools for tree building (JJTree) and automatic creation of documentation files (JJDoc)

The free download and resource links (grammar repositories, mailing list info, documentation, etc.) are now available, however, WebGain has announced that they have ceased the further development of their tools and seek to sell all of their assets (see related link below). WebGain states that they will continue to support their product line until the individual products have been sold.
