iNET from Halcyon provides for the .NET programmer a means to deploy their applications to Java environments. The iNET tool appears to the .NET developer as an additional "Deploy to Java" command in Visual Studio.NET, a wizard-based translator, or as a command line utility. When implemented, this iNET IL2JAVA engine translates the .NET Intermediate Language (IL) code into Java runtime classes along with an installation package allowing the application to work on a Java enabled platform. Additional licensing options are expected to be offered by Halcyon allowing for the translation of the IL code directly into Java Source code, allowing developers to further modify the resulting Java applications before compilation.
The running of the .NET application within a Java environment is enabled via Java runtime classes that duplicate the functionality of the .NET Class libraries. These runtimes, according to Halcyon, operate over all Java enabled platforms, providing Java applications with the same routines and support required for the original .NET applications. Where links to Microsoft specific components such as COM objects or DLLs are necessary, the vendor's iHUB connection technology allows for the Java applications to access Microsoft objects via SOAP or .NET Remote protocols.
A free evaluation version of the iNET Beta is now available. Pricing for the final release has not yet been announced. Contact Halcyon Software for further information.
