The Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE), allows you to write and run Java applications that conform to the latest API for the Java Programming Language. J2SE contains both the Java Software Development Kit (SDK - formerly known as the Java Development Kit prior to v1.2.2) and the Java Runtime Environment. J2SE has several components, including the Java Compiler, Java Virtual Machine, Java Class Libraries, Java AppletViewer, and the Java Debugger. The J2SE is a free download from the Sun Web site.
Version 1.4 of the J2SE is now available. According to Sun, the new release offers performance enhancements; enhanced support for SSL, LDAP, and CORBA and built-in support for XML; new GUI controls; expanded internationalization and localization support; and expanded Windows XP support.
