Borland JBuilder 6

JBuilder is a scalable, visual Java development tool for creating high-performance, platform-independent client/server and multi-tier Java applications that span the enterprise.

JBuilder is designed for development projects at all levels, ranging from applets and applications requiring client/server database connectivity to enterprise-wide, distributed computing solutions. It supports 100% pure Java, JavaBeans, ActiveX, JDBC, ODBC, and all major corporate database servers. It provides developers with the flexibility to incorporate add-ins, JavaBeans components, and third-party wizards to expand the capabilities of the tools.

In addition to standard Java development, the free JBuilder MobileSet download is provided to developers specifically for the creation of applications that run on J2ME (Java 2 Micro Edition) enabled devices, such as wireless handhelds. The latest MobileSet release (1.0.3) supports Sun's J2ME emulation environment, the J2ME Wireless Toolkit.

Key features in the latest JBuilder (6.0) include integration support for multiple application servers, including BEA WebLogic 6.1, IBM WebSphere 4, iPlanet and Borland Enterprise Server; multiple UML Code Visualization enhancements; refactoring and unit testing tools; and support for Mac OS X.

JBuilder 6 is expected to begin shipping on December 5, 2001 in three versions: Personal, Professional, and Enterprise (visit the Borland site for differences between versions). Formerly free, JBuilder Personal will now be priced at $54.95 from the Borland site. The Professional version sells for $999, while the Enterprise version is currently listed at $2,999. Upgrade pricing is available.

Borland is the original name of the Borland company. They changed their name to Inprise Corporation for over two years from early 1998 to late 2000; at which time they reverted to the name Borland.
