JRun is a Java application server that fully supports Sun's Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) 1.3. Previously containing both the application server and the developers package JRun Studio, JRun Studio functionality has now been incorporated within Macromedia's recently announced Dreamweaver MX and is no longer available as a separate product.
As expected in a Java Application Server, JRun server provides support for Java Servlets and JavaServer Pages (JSP) on any Web server that supports ISAPI, NSAPI, Apache API, or CGI. Additional features of the Server include a full J2EE 1.3 implementation, including support for Enterprise JavaBeans and integrated messaging and transaction servers supporting the JMS and JTA (Java Transaction API) specifications. Previously available in three versions (Pro, Advanced, Enterprise) the latest JRun release is sold as a single product with licensing options for developers, standard commercial deployments, and upgrades.
Key features in the latest JRun release (4) include the ability to expose Java Classes or EJBs as Web services; advanced clustering support including dynamic discovery of peer servers based on Jini, load balancing, and in-memory replication for state preservation in the case of failover; and support for Macromedia Flash Remoting, a method of enabling remote Flash payers to interact directly with server based components.
JRun 4 is available now, with a price of $899 per CPU ($499 upgrade). A free, limited developer's edition is also available.
