JavaRunner is a utility for Java application developers that allows them to add instant auto-update capabilities to their applications. By utilizing JavaRunner, developers can create apps that automatically check a centralized server location when run. If a newer version of the application is detected at that location, JavaRunner automatically downloads it and updates to the newer version of the program. In order to deploy a new version of the program, developers need only place the newer program version in the update directory on the server.
JavaRunner uses the HTTP protocol to both check for newer program versions and transfer the newer components when found, meaning that users behind firewalls can also be automatically updated. All individual components of an application can be updated, including text files, graphics, jar, and class files.
Additional features of the product include the ability to block the central update location temporarily (while uploading new program versions, for example), and multiple command line arguments allowing for detailed logging and tracing of events.
JavaRunner is available now from the THWT JavaToolshed Web site. Pricing ranges from $79.95 (20 copies or more) to $99.95 for a single copy. A 30 day trial version is also available.
