Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME)

The Java 2 Micro Edition is a lean Java platform targeted specifically to embedded applications such as those found in pagers, cellular phones, and PDAs. The platform consists of a Virtual Machine (VM) and a set of APIs; with the technology based on an architecture consisting of both configurations and profiles.

A J2ME Configuration consists of an optimized VM and the two lowest level APIs for interfacing with the device and/or OS itself. Available configurations are split into two major categories; depending primarily on the amount of memory the device can make available to Java.

On top of the specific J2ME configurations are built profiles, which provide specific APIs for Java developers to access the functionality provided by the configurations. Additional functionality can be added to the platform through the use of Optional Packages; API sets targeted to specific industries or uses.

Latest releases of the J2ME Configuration and Profile have been made available for the Palm, and most recently, the Linux OS. The Palm version, specifically, allows developers to create and run Java based apps that will run on Palm powered devices. Sun states that the J2ME technology will be made available to developers so that they can include it with their distributed apps. The Mobile Information Device (MID) profile, which extends the J2ME with the ability to download apps and services via a network (among other things) is also available for Palm.

Future profile developments include the PDA (Personal Digital Assistants) profile, which will provide developers with API access to the Palm User interface. With the PDA Profile, developers are expected to be able to access user interface features such as the the user clipboard and font settings.
