Tellme Studio provides developers with a quick way to create, test, and debug VXML applications. VXML is an XML based syntax allowing for the control and data flow of telephone based inquiries; tags exist for the prompting of users using text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis or wave files, the recognition of voice commands from the user, and the logical program control based on the voice commands provided by the user.
Studio registration is free, and once developers are logged in they can create VXML files in the provided VXML scratch pad, or alternately create and upload files to their own servers and simply provide the URL of the file for processing by the Studio. Multiple tools are available to assist the developer in the creation of their voice applications, including a syntax checker, tag reference section, and developer newsgroup.
Having created the VXML files, developers can instantly test the results by dialing a toll-free number and entering their developer ID and PIN (selected during registration). Their stored VXML file is then executed for them live over the phone.
The development service is free; however, developers are warned in the Tellme Terms of Service Agreement that they may not make their developed sites publicly available by publishing their ID and PIN. Future planned enhancements include the incorporation of developed sites into the Tellme consumer service, and/or the linking of sites developed in Tellme to their own toll-free number for public accessibility.
